Quick answer: A working Xiaohongshu (XHS / RedNote) marketing strategy has six parts: (1) position for search, not for the feed, (2) set 3 content pillars, (3) build a creator mix of KOCs and KOLs, (4) own your brand and category keywords, (5) amplify winners with 聚光 ads, (6) measure saves and brand-search position, not likes. Skip step 1 and the rest underperforms, because XHS is a research platform first and a social platform second.
Step 1 — Position for search, not for the feed
Malaysian users open Xiaohongshu to research a purchase: “Puchong dental clinic”, “sunscreen for oily skin”, “KL omakase under RM300”. Your strategy starts with the question: what will a buyer type into XHS search before choosing us? Write those 5–10 phrases down. Every note, creator brief and ad targets one of them. Brands that treat XHS like Instagram — pretty posts for followers — get views and no sales.
Step 2 — Set three content pillars
Pick three recurring note formats that fit your category and rotate them:
- Honest review / 测评 — the format XHS users trust most. Pros, cons, who it is for.
- Before / after or process — treatments, renovations, cooking, fitness. Visual proof.
- Guide / 攻略 — “how to choose”, “what to order”, “price comparison”. These rank for category keywords and get saved.
Tutorials, gift guides and “things I wish I knew” lists also work. Promotional announcements do not — save those for your own enterprise account, not for creators.
Step 3 — Build a creator mix
Use KOCs (1K–10K followers) for volume and KOLs (30K+) for reach, in roughly a 10:1 ratio. KOC notes are what appear when someone searches your brand; the KOL note is what makes them search in the first place. Brief creators on three talking points and one claim to avoid, then let them write in their own voice. Full breakdown in our guide to Xiaohongshu KOL vs KOC seeding in Malaysia.
Step 4 — Own your brand and category keywords
XHS search ranks notes by relevance and engagement, with recent notes weighted higher. To own a keyword:
- Put the keyword in the note title and first sentence.
- Publish 10–20 notes on that keyword within 2 weeks, then maintain 8–10 per month.
- Reply to every comment within 24 hours — comment activity feeds ranking.
- Verify your enterprise account (Blue Tick) so your own profile ranks for the brand name.
Step 5 — Amplify winners with 聚光 (Juguang) ads
Do not boost everything. After two weeks, the top 10–20% of notes by saves and comments are obvious. Boost those through 聚光 with Malaysia geo-targeting and keyword search placement. Organic proof first, paid reach second — this keeps cost per result low and avoids the “sponsored” trust penalty on cold content.
Step 6 — Measure saves and search position, not likes
In order of importance:
- Brand-search position — search your brand name on XHS weekly; count how many of the top 10 results are yours.
- Saves (收藏) — the strongest predictor of purchase intent.
- Comments — especially “where to buy” and “how much”.
- Profile visits and follows on your enterprise account.
- Views and likes — vanity unless tied to the above.
Expect brand-search dominance in 4–8 weeks and measurable sales or enquiry lift from month two. Reference outcomes from our campaigns: +67% brand awareness (aesthetics), +30% patient enquiries (clinic), +20% sales (F&B) — details in our Xiaohongshu case studies.
Strategy by industry (Malaysia)
- F&B: 攻略 notes (“what to order at …”), KOC tasting reviews, location keyword in every title.
- Clinics & aesthetics: before/after with treatment name, doctor Q&A on the enterprise account, 20+ KOC reviews before any ads.
- Beauty & skincare: 测评 against competitors, ingredient-led titles, product-exchange KOCs for volume.
- Education & services: parent / customer story notes, comparison guides, strong comment-reply discipline.
- Overseas brands entering Malaysia: seed 30+ notes before launch so the brand name already returns reviews on day one — this is how 翰方御品 (Taiwan) entered Malaysia via XHS.
Budget and timeline
A first 90-day strategy for a Malaysian SME typically runs RM6,000–RM12,000: Blue Tick setup, 20–30 KOC seeding notes, 5–10 video reviews and a small 聚光 test. Full line items are in our Xiaohongshu marketing cost guide for Malaysia.
