Every few years a new ad platform opens up and the brands that test early get cheap learnings before everyone else piles in. It happened with Facebook Ads around 2012, TikTok Ads around 2020, and in 2026 it is happening with ChatGPT Ads. This guide covers what the platform is, how it actually works today, what it costs, and how a business in Malaysia can run a first campaign without wasting budget.
What are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads are paid placements inside ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI assistant. They show up as a clearly labelled “Sponsored” card underneath the answer, separate from the answer itself. OpenAI’s stated rule is that advertising never changes what ChatGPT says, so the ad sits next to the conversation rather than inside it.
Ads are shown to people on the free plan and the low-cost Go plan. Paid subscribers on Plus and Pro tiers do not see them. In practice that still covers the large majority of ChatGPT’s users, including most consumers in Malaysia.
A short timeline (so you know how new this is)
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| Jan 2026 | OpenAI confirms ads are coming to ChatGPT |
| Feb 2026 | Ads go live in the United States via direct sales; Criteo joins as the first ad-tech partner |
| May 2026 | Self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager opens, bringing in SMB and mid-market advertisers; first DSP access begins |
| Jun 2026 | OpenAI presents the ads product to agencies at Cannes Lions |
| Aug 2026 | OpenAI reports a US$1 billion annualised run rate and availability in 40+ countries; Ads Manager purchasing opens across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa |
The practical takeaway: the platform is real, growing fast, and still early enough that most Malaysian brands have not touched it.
How ChatGPT Ads targeting works
This is the part that is different from Google Ads. You do not bid on keywords. You target conversation topics and intent categories, so your ad appears around the question the person is actually asking. If someone asks ChatGPT “which sunscreen is good for oily skin in a humid climate”, a skincare brand targeting skincare conversations in Malaysia can appear below that answer.
The targeting controls available in Ads Manager today include:
- Conversation topics / categories — the subject of the chat
- Geographic targeting — country and region, so you can run Malaysia-only or Malaysia + Singapore
- Platform targeting — web vs. mobile app
- Custom audiences — uploaded from your own customer data
- Product feeds — for e-commerce brands, so individual products can be shown
There is also a first-party conversion tag you install on your website so Ads Manager can report post-click actions such as leads, WhatsApp clicks or purchases.
How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?
Ads are bought on a cost-per-click (CPC) basis through Ads Manager. Pricing is auction-driven, so it depends on how many advertisers are competing for the same conversation topics in your region and how well your creative performs. Early reporting from OpenAI’s partners suggests that advertisers with stronger, more relevant creative pay less per impression than those with weak creative.
For Malaysia specifically, competition on most topics is very low right now, which usually means lower CPCs than Google Search for the same intent. That will not stay true forever. The early-mover window is the main reason to test now rather than in 2027.
Can a business in Malaysia advertise on ChatGPT?
Yes, with a caveat. OpenAI has expanded access to advertisers in more than 40 countries through its Ads Solutions team, agency partners and the self-serve Ads Manager, and has been opening direct Ads Manager purchasing region by region. Eligibility and billing options are still being rolled out, so the fastest way to confirm what is currently available for your company is to talk to an agency that is already setting up accounts.
Which Malaysian businesses should test ChatGPT Ads first?
OpenAI has said travel, retail, health, beauty and financial services perform well on the platform. From the client work we do at Mayin Digital, we would add:
| Industry | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Beauty, skincare, aesthetic clinics | People ask ChatGPT “which treatment / product is right for me” long before they search a brand name |
| Healthcare, TCM, fertility, wellness | High-consideration decisions with a lot of research — the exact conversations where a relevant sponsored card helps |
| F&B and retail with online catalogues | Product feed support suits brands already on Shopee, TikTok Shop or their own store |
| B2B services, education, software | Complex offers that are hard to explain in a 6-second video are easier to explain in a conversation |
How to run your first ChatGPT Ads campaign: a 5-step plan
1. Map the questions your customers ask AI
Before touching Ads Manager, list 20–30 real questions your buyers would type into ChatGPT. Not keywords — full questions. “Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?” “Best confinement food delivery in KL?” These become your topic targeting and your creative angles.
2. Set up the account and conversion tag properly
Create the Ads Manager account, set billing, and install the conversion tag on your site before any spend. Without the tag you will only see clicks, and clicks alone will not tell you whether the channel works.
3. Write ads that read like a useful answer
Banner-style copy performs badly here. The ad sits under an AI answer, so it should read like a helpful continuation: who it is for, what it does, and a specific reason to click. Send the click to a landing page that matches the conversation, not a generic homepage.
4. Start with a controlled test budget
Run a 3–4 week test with a budget you are comfortable treating as learning spend. Compare cost per lead against your existing Google and Meta benchmarks. Give it at least two creative rounds before judging.
5. Pair ads with organic AI visibility (GEO)
Ads put you under the answer. Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) works on getting your brand recommended inside the answer. Brands that do both tend to compound: the ad drives immediate traffic while GEO builds the organic mentions that make AI models recommend you without paying. See our AI SEO & GEO services for that side.
ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads vs Meta Ads
| ChatGPT Ads | Google Search Ads | Meta Ads | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Targeting | Conversation topics, intent categories, geo, custom audiences | Keywords, geo, audiences | Interests, behaviours, lookalikes |
| Intent level | High — mid-research questions | High — explicit search | Low to medium — interruption |
| Format | Sponsored card below the answer | Text ad in results | Image / video in feed |
| Competition in Malaysia (late 2026) | Very low | High | High |
| Best use | Testing a new high-intent channel early | Capturing existing demand | Creating demand and retargeting |
Common mistakes we already see
- Copy-pasting Google Ads headlines. They are written for a search results page, not a conversation.
- Targeting too broad. “Beauty” as a topic wastes budget; “acne treatment” or “anti-ageing skincare” converts.
- No conversion tag. You end up arguing about whether it worked instead of knowing.
- Judging after one week. New platforms need creative iteration; two or three rounds is normal.
- Ignoring the organic side. If ChatGPT already recommends a competitor in the answer, your ad underneath has to work twice as hard.
Frequently asked questions
Do ChatGPT Ads change what ChatGPT says?
No. OpenAI’s ads principles state that advertising does not influence the answers. Ads are labelled and shown separately below the response.
Who sees ChatGPT Ads?
Users on the free plan and the Go plan. Plus and Pro subscribers do not see ads.
Is there a minimum budget?
The self-serve Ads Manager was built to open the platform to small and medium businesses, so you do not need an enterprise budget. We recommend a defined test budget for the first month rather than a fixed minimum.
Can I run ChatGPT Ads myself?
Yes, if Ads Manager is available for your region and you are comfortable with campaign setup, targeting and the conversion tag. Most brands we talk to prefer an agency to handle setup and the first optimisation cycles because the targeting model is new.
How is this different from GEO / AI SEO?
GEO is organic: earning a place in the AI’s actual recommendation. ChatGPT Ads is paid: a sponsored card below the answer. They complement each other.
